Founded by Richard Craib in 2015, Numeraire Financial, Inc. (operating as Numerai) is a unique hedge fund based in San Francisco. The company's core mission is to monopolize intelligence in the financial markets by building a better hedge fund through crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence. Numerai hosts a continuous data science tournament where participants from around the world are given encrypted financial data to build machine learning models that predict stock market movements. Data scientists stake the company's cryptocurrency, Numeraire (NMR), on their models' predictive confidence. Successful predictions are rewarded with more NMR, while poor predictions result in the staked NMR being "burned" (destroyed). Numerai then combines the most promising predictions into a meta-model that directs the hedge fund's trading strategy.
