Founded in 2013 as one of the first OTC bitcoin trading desks, Genesis Global Trading grew into a full-service digital currency prime brokerage. A subsidiary of the Digital Currency Group (DCG), Genesis provided a single point of access for sophisticated market participants to trade, borrow, lend, and custody digital assets. The company served an institutional clientele, including hedge funds, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals. Following severe financial distress caused by the collapse of Three Arrows Capital and FTX, the company's lending arm, Genesis Global Capital, halted customer withdrawals in November 2022 and subsequently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2023.
