Founded in 1999 by former SEC Commissioner Steven M. H. Wallman, Folio Financial, Inc. was a pioneer in the fintech space, offering retail and institutional investment services. The company was best known for its patented, folio-based investing approach, which allowed investors to create customized baskets of stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds. It was one of the first brokerages to offer fractional share trading, making it easier for individuals to build diversified portfolios with small amounts of capital. In May 2020, Goldman Sachs announced its acquisition of Folio Financial to expand its services for the Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) market. Folio's technology and clearing services have since been integrated into Goldman Sachs Advisor Solutions.
