Diaspora

diaspora* was founded in 2010 as a privacy-aware, decentralized social network, an alternative to centralized platforms like Facebook. Instead of a single central server, it consists of a network of independently owned servers, called "pods," that interoperate to form the network. Users can create an account on any pod and still communicate with users on all other pods. The project's mission is to build a network that places users in control of their own data. The Diaspora Foundation is the community-run organization responsible for the stewardship of the project's development and brand.
