Founded in 1995 as a 50/50 joint venture between bpost (the Belgian postal group) and BNP Paribas Fortis, bpost bank focused on providing simple and accessible retail banking products to the Belgian public. Its unique business model leveraged the extensive network of Belgian post offices as physical branches, offering services such as current and savings accounts, consumer loans, mortgages, and insurance products. In January 2024, the full integration of bpost bank's operations, clients, and products into its parent company, BNP Paribas Fortis, was completed, and the "bpost bank" brand was retired.
