Bankia

Bankia was formed in December 2010 as a result of the merger of seven Spanish regional savings banks ("cajas de ahorros"). It became one of Spain's largest banks, offering universal banking services including retail and commercial banking, corporate finance, asset management, and insurance. The bank faced significant financial distress during the Spanish financial crisis, leading to a government bailout and nationalization in 2012. After a period of restructuring and recovery, Bankia was fully merged into CaixaBank by absorption in March 2021, creating Spain's largest domestic lender.
