Apple File System (APFS) is a modern file system designed for Apple devices, replacing the older HFS+ system. Introduced in 2016 with macOS Sierra, APFS is optimized for flash storage, offering significant performance improvements, enhanced security features, and efficient data management.
APFS leverages a Copy-On-Write mechanism to manage file modifications efficiently. Instead of copying an entire file when changes are made, APFS modifies the file in place, recording the alterations. This means that file changes are either fully committed to storage or completely rolled back in case of a failure, preventing data corruption. APFS implements robust encryption for its volumes, enhancing data security. Users can choose from three encryption options:
APFS supports TRIM, a command used to inform the storage device about unused data blocks. By deleting these blocks, TRIM optimizes performance by freeing up space and reducing fragmentation. This optimization is particularly important for flash storage, as it helps maintain disk health and improves write performance.
Each APFS file system begins with a block header, containing vital information such as checksums, block IDs, versions, types, and flags. This header allows the system to quickly identify and verify blocks. The container superblock acts as the entry point for the file system, storing information about block sizes, block counts, and pointers to space managers and block maps.
Each volume within APFS has its own volume superblock, which contains key information about the volume, including its name, ID, timestamps, and pointers to block maps and root directories. This superblock acts as the central control point for managing each volume.
APFS supports snapshots, which are read-only copies of a volume at a specific point in time. Snapshots provide a way to manage data by allowing users to revert to previous states without affecting the original data. This functionality is useful for backing up files, testing software updates, or restoring data in case of accidental deletion or corruption.
