Founded in 1874 as the Farmers National Gold Bank in San Jose, California, Bank of the West grew to become a major regional bank serving communities throughout the Western and Midwestern United States. It was a subsidiary of the French multinational banking group BNP Paribas from 1979 until 2023. The bank offered a wide range of products including retail banking, commercial banking, wealth management, and investment services to individuals, small businesses, and corporate clients. On February 1, 2023, Bank of the West was officially acquired by the Canadian BMO Financial Group, and by September 2023, all its branches and services were rebranded and integrated into BMO, ceasing the Bank of the West brand's operations.
